Tanker Attacks Disrupt Oil’s Predictable Cycle

After headline-grabbing tanker attacks on Thursday, politics are front and center in the oil markets again, and could be the major determinant of prices for the next several weeks.

That’s a big change from recent dynamics. High supply and low demand have been the biggest factors in the oil market, and drove prices to bear-market levels last week. But that pattern changed suddenly on Thursday, after reports that two tankers carrying petroleum products near Iran had been attacked. U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo blamed the attack on Iran, citing intelligence and that the attack resembled prior Iranian operations. Iran denied involvement. Oil prices jumped, on fears that oil shipments are increasingly vulnerable to attacks—and perhaps even war.
